Tigrin clan: Kataya Kotoko

Description

Another portrait of a character from the novel I am currently writing, and the finished product of the sketch I tossed in my scraps a few weeks ago.

Kataya Kotoko is the eldest daughter of Lord Kotoko, leader of the Tigrin clan (think weretigers). She is also the novel personification of my best friend. Kataya is young, playful, caring, and slightly amorous. She has ambitions to rise in rank within her clan, but knows she still has years to attain that dream.

She is wearing a purple crystal, called cromythian, as a sign of respect for the loss of her mother and has not taken it off since hearing of her mother's death.

My scanner ate the detail, first of all. The original, which is a gift for Katy, looks amazingly beautiful in comparison. The colors are darker and there isn't a strange white halo around her. This was my first attempt at glowing things and I'm fairly happy with how the purple shading came out (again, in the original especially). The glowy part around the crystal could use some work, but I didn't want it to overpower the portrait. Besides, cromythian doesn't shine like car headlights in your eyes. It's more of the gorgeous ambiant light of Christmas tree lights.

I was trying my hand at a softer look and I think it worked out pretty well. Kataya is so much softer than Auren ([link]), who is quite the hard-ass in comparison.

I might try to get a better scan of this that shows the details, but for now you guys get the idea. :)

This portrait turned out so great. I like the shading and the light and all the details! She looks wise and clear-minded. Wonderful picture though I thought the eyes where more greenish and not so yellow. :D It's unexpected and interesting! :D
